Science Agrees: BCAAs Are Awesome

FO_BCAAsport_WatermelonAs experts in the supplement industry, we are intimately familiar with concerns and questions customers and the paying public may have about products.

Do they work? (To wildly varying degrees, yes – buy the good ones.) Are they safe? (Buy from reputable vendors like Nutrishop, and they couldn’t be safer – we don’t hesitate to yank inferior products off our shelves.) What exactly do they do?

We like to turn to science and study when it comes to answering all of those questions. ln recent years, what’s come to light specifically about one certain supplement is extremely encouraging. Not only do BCAAs stand up as an excellent product for fat loss and muscle gain in non-biased, scientific review, but they routinely make regular customers’ shopping lists each time they visit us. A lot of products will come and go – only the best ones stick around when the hype wears off and results are all that’s left. And at the end of the day, BCAAs are always left standing.

What makes Branched Chain Amino Acids such an effective supplement? For starters, BCAAs are incredibly versatile.  Typically, supplements can reasonably claim to address one or two goals – strength, muscle mass, fat loss, or athletic performance. BCAAs can help with all of them.

A randomized, double-blind study, published in the Journal of International Society of Sports Nutrition, was performed to “evaluate the efficacy of consuming a supplement containing branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) during an eight-week resistance-training program.”  The conclusion:

Ingestion of a supplement containing BCAAs while following an 8-week resistance training program resulted in a greater decrease in percent body fat, an increase in lean mass, and 10-RM strength gains on the bench press and squat vs. ingestion of a whey supplement or a sports drink. In addition, the ingestion of a whey protein supplement resulted in greater lean mass gains than ingestion of a sports drink.

What does that mean? In short: Regular use of BCAAs as a supplement to your diet and training program make you leaner and stronger. Less fat, more muscle, more strength.

Benefits don’t stop there. In 2006, The Journal of Nutrition published a study that found BCAAs to play a role in reducing exercise fatigue – meaning that if you took BCAAs before and/or during your workouts, you could go more intensely, or longer, to get more out of your exercise. The same study found that “Branched-chain amino acids also positively influence the metabolic response of muscle to exercise.”

Translation: BCAAs slow your metabolism’s feast on your muscle tissue when you’re working out.

Even when you’re not training, though, BCAAs have the same effect. So if you’re taking a break, trying out anabolic fasting diets, going on vacation or suffering an injury that keeps you out of the gym, knocking back BCAAs regularly will help slow the muscle catabolism (your body using muscle for energy) or atrophy that would otherwise occur. That phenomenon was proven out in a study published in Nutrition Research in 2012.

It’s not snake oil, folks.

For years, the most-researched and trusted supplements in this industry were whey protein and creatine. Doubters cropped up all over the place at first, but as the scientific method consistently proved them wrong, these products clearly developed staying power. Well, it’s time to add BCAAs to that list. Study after study is showing that amino acids are not only just an emerging powerhouse supplement, but a must-have for all ranges of athletic ability – from elite athletes to first-day beginners.

Meet the Nutrishop Owners: Toby Schindelbeck

12042909_10200940510070784_8204265187318159705_nToby Schindelbeck owns and operates Nutrishop Coeur d’Alene, along with his wife of 16 years, Lisa. Toby began his fitness journey in 1997, when he decided to get serious about losing fat. After putting together his own supplement, workout and meal program, he lost 40 pounds and 6 inches in his waist in only four months.

Toby became a personal trainer and started working at a local GNC in the fall of 1997. In March of 1998, Toby bought the Max Muscle Sports Nutrition store in Riverside, California. He became the youngest franchise owner in Max Muscle history at the age of 20, and was the No. 1 store out of 180 for the next 3 years straight.

After marrying Lisa in 2000, they opened a gym called Accelerated Results next to their flagship Max Muscle store, and over the next five years they opened four more Max Muscle locations in the Riverside area.

In 2006, tired of the traffic and crowds in Southern California, they sold their Riverside locations and moved north to Chico, California, where they opened a Nutrishop Sports Nutrition store in January of 2007. They built that store into the No. 1 Nutrishop out of 145 for the next three years. They opened a second Chico location in 2010, and sold both locations in 2013 to move to beautiful Coeur d’Alene. Their Coeur d’Alene Nutrishop is currently the No. 2 store out of over 230 locations.

Toby’s passion for helping others is why he loves what he does.

“My Oma (grandma) had Type 2 diabetes for most of her adult life, and complications from the disease eventually killed her. She had diabetic necropathy in her foot for eight years, glaucoma that required five laser eye surgeries, and eventually was put on dialysis. Her diabetic nutritionist told her she needed more potassium and fiber, so he recommended eating bananas and cereal! That would obviously cause a blood sugar spike, so his answer was ‘just take a couple extra IU’s of insulin.’ This just made her much worse.

“I was just getting into nutrition near the end of her life, and as I learned more about endocrinology, I knew that I could have helped her beat that disease, or at least improved her quality of life. Type 2 diabetes can be controlled, and I have helped many of my clients reduce or eliminate their need for diabetes medication through proper meal planning and supplementation.”

To him, fitness isn’t just about gaining muscle or losing fat; it is also about improving the quality of his clients’ lives.

“At a certain point, it becomes less about how you look and more about your quality of life and health. Being able to enjoy your kids and grandkids, being active and enjoying everything God has blessed us with. If I can help someone reduce the amount of medication they are on, have more energy to spend with their family, and generally improve the quality of my clients’ lives, then I am happy.  I see my job as my ministry, and using the gifts that God gave me to help others.”

Toby has competed in three bodybuilding competitions, placing fourth in two contests and second in one (with the huge help of Lisa’s cooking!). He also holds the California state record for deadlift in the drug-tested WABDL powerlifting league, with a deadlift of 602.5 in the 242-pound weight class.

Toby has also held numerous personal training and nutrition certifications, including as an International Sports Sciences Association personal trainer, Dave Palumbo’s S.M.A.R.T. certified trainer/nutritionist, and currently holds an International Fitness Association Sports Nutritionist Certification.

When he isn’t working at the shop, Toby loves to enjoy North Idaho’s beauty from the bow of his fishing boat. He also loves to hike Tubbs Hill and take long walks with Lisa and their two pups, Fiona and Ellie.

Meet the Nutrishop Owners: Lisa Schindelbeck

unnamedLisa Schindelbeck, co-owner of Nutrishop CDA, lives in Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho and considers herself blessed and privileged to get to help her community in the very thing she is so passionate about, health and nutrition. With her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California at Riverside, she went to work with McNeil Pharmeceutical, a Johnson and Johnson Company, as one of their youngest representatives in the field. In working with doctors, nurses and the healthcare industry, she realized that helping people become the healthiest versions of themselves is what truly inspired her. But with the handcuffs of western medicine and pharmaceuticals, she would have to widen her knowledge of health, supplements and nutrition to truly help people.

She set her sights on the Natural Health care industry and became a sales representative for a local supplement distributor in Southern California and began working with Toby Schindelbeck at Max Muscle Riverside, Ca., a sports nutrition store. She attained her supplement certification and became a certified personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine. In addition to working at Max Muscle, Lisa and Toby created and opened a private gym and training studio, Accelerated Results, where she helped educate so many members of her community about their health, nutrition, supplements and exercise. Her clients’ transformations were phenomenal, and her vision of helping people harness the tools to change their lives for the better had become a reality!

Lisa and Toby went on to open four Max Muscle stores in Riverside, Ca. She began her own Nutrition counseling company, Total Body Nutrition in 2004, where she focused on supplements and nutrition with her clients. She then created her own line of goal oriented meals, called Fit Meals, hired a chef and in a professional kitchen used whole foods to create custom meals with the goal of increasing lean muscle mass and decreasing body fat simultaneously. Fit Meals were a wholesome success and were sold in all four stores as well as the local spa. But Lisa and Toby had a deep desire to leave the chaos of Southern California. So they soon sold all four stores and Accelerated Results and headed for Northern California, looking forward to all of the beauty and space it had to offer.

Lisa and Toby moved to Paradise, Ca. and opened two Nutrishop sports nutrition and weight-loss superstores, in the nearby town of Chico. Nutrishop was always cutting edge and ahead of the sports nutrition market. The services and value that they offered to their clients were unparalleled! Lisa then began to dig deeper into the natural health industry, and completed her Applied Kinesiology courses through a well known naturopath. In learning more about her own physical struggles of digestive disease and hormone imbalances, she fought to heal herself and educate others with the similar needs. Lisa loved her friends, the community, the forest, rivers and parks Paradise and Chico had to offer but God was calling her and Toby north.

In 2013 Lisa and Toby headed to Coeur d ‘Alene, Idaho, where they fell in love with the lakes, the land and community. The construction started quickly to open the Northwest’s first Nutrishop and within two months, the doors were open! The CDA community had a massive need for intelligent, goal oriented supplement and nutrition design to come together for the everyday person. She and Toby wanted to make Nutrishop CDA a place where husbands, wives, friends, family members, athletes, competitors and every person in their community could come and be encouraged, get educated and have all of the support that he or she needed to be the healthiest versions of themselves!

Then in late 2013, Lisa was diagnosed with Lyme disease throughout her whole body and brain. After seeking the help of a Natural practitioner and diving into more research about the body, supplements and nutrition than she ever could have imagined, she began to heal.

“The gift of surviving your own fight for health is that you can use your new knowledge, experience and compassion to help others in theirs. What we do here is personal. We learn so much about our clients, their journeys and goals. It’s an awesome experience!”

Lisa loves the personal relationships that this type of business cultivates! “Let what you love be what you do” is what I get to do on a daily basis. “Toby and I work very hard, but we both get to do what we love, and we are so blessed for it!”

Meet the Nutrishop Staff: Alyssa Campbell

unnamedI have worked at Nutrishop for almost a year now. In high school I doubled on sciences almost every year and am currently studying towards a dietetics degree.

I first came into Nutrishop as a client and was baffled by the amount of knowledge that the employees had. Also due to my background in science I was able to discern whether the information was true or not. (It was!) Since Nutrishop is based on nutrition and not just supplements it seemed like a good fit for me.

We are very family oriented! Even though it is important to maintain a certain level of business attitude in the workplace, we are all good friends and love each other like family! Everyone that works for Nutrishop also has a heart to serve and that is what we want to show clients when we come in! We always just look to serve everyone as best as we can!

I like spending time with family and with my super supportive boyfriend. We do a lot of community service together and spend a lot of time together as a family! I am very blessed to be where I am at now.

My favorite thing to do in CDA is walking the boardwalk and the beach. I like being active (with BCAA’s in hand of course!) and spending as much time in the sun is always preferable!

Meet the Nutrishop Staff: DJ Bradway

unnamedMeet DJ! DJ is a Certified sports nutritionist, who has held an interest in bodybuilding and weight training for 15 years.

I wanted to work at Nutrishop because Nutrishop, and more specifically Toby, helped me change my life around. I came in June 1st 2015 and I was 318 lbs. Toby went over a meal plan and some supplements to help me turn my life around. In one year I lost over 102 lbs of fat and embarked on a whole new path in my life.

When I found out Nutrishop was hiring I wanted to help others turn their life around like Toby did for me. I want to see our community make a positive and healthy shift, for each person that looks different – no one person fits into the same mold, but most everyone wants to live a happier healthier life and I want to help them achieve their health and fitness goals.

Outside of work I love working out and weight training. When the weather is nice I love going camping with my family and hiking in the mountains. I have been a competitive shooter for 17 years, have trained in martial arts for 12 years, and played paintball for 18 years.

My favorite thing to do in CDA is go to the beach and swim, BBQ, and enjoy this beautiful country and state we live in.

We have an excellent work environment, the whole Nutrishop team is like a family. I look forward to coming to work every day. I look forward to figuring out how to help each individual and trouble shoot to figure out the right product and the right plan for them.

Meet the Nutrishop Staff: Darby Perry

unnamedTime for an introductory Q&A with our own Darby Perry!

Q: What experience do you have in the health and fitness field?

I took 3 years of sports medicine in high school, and that’s where my love for fitness started. After high school I worked for an online supplement retailer, and learned how to counsel customers with nutrition and fitness. I am currently in school pursuing a degree in the health care field.

Q: What made you interested in working at Nutrishop?

I participated in a challenge with my mom this January. Toby, Lisa, Carly and DJ were so helpful and positive – it’s contagious. I love the products we have at Nutrishop and how well they’ve worked for me in my own life, and I want to share how amazing the products are with everyone. When I was still a customer I remember thinking that everyone seemed so passionate about their job and helping others reach their goals, so I jumped at the chance when I saw they were hiring.

Q: What do you like most about working with Nutrishop staff and clients?

I love coming to my job every day. I’m excited to help our clients reach their goals – it’s so inspiring to see that you can really make a difference. I really enjoy working along my coworkers. They have so much knowledge and passion!

Q: What is your favorite thing to do or place in CDA?

My favorite thing to do in CDA is hiking Tubbs Hill. The view is gorgeous! Being out on the lake in the summer is pretty amazing too.

Q: What interests do you have outside of work?

I’m a college student so I don’t have a ton of free time. However, I love working out when I can find time. Finess and health are very important to me, and I love spending time with my family.

Meet the Nutrishop Staff: Carly Williams

IMG_7923Carly Williams, our Business Promotions Manager, is originally from Spokane, Wa and has been an active member in the Coeur d’Alene community since 2011. With a diverse background she offers insight in the dynamic environment that we have the privilege of providing. In addition to studying Business at Gonzaga University and Visual Communications at ITT Technical Institute, she is a “lifetime learner.”

She has a background in holistic health and sports nutrition, and has provided nutritional and supplement consulting since 2008, being a Marketing Director and Wellness Advocate for a International Wellness Co-op. Through personal research due to her own digestive intolerances and environmental allergies, she has studied and applied different methods to fitness and nutrition to maximize one’s vitality.

Since 2014, she spent nearly three years care taking for a disabled Army Veteran helping him lose weight, get out of a wheel chair bound future, nearly eliminate the effects of PTSD and TBI and get off harmful and synthetic medications through proper nutrition and positive lifestyle changes. Consequently, this later lead to helping many other Veterans, at varying degrees of disability, in the surrounding areas in their road to recovery. Through meal planning, life coaching, and connecting with local non-profits she was able to make a lasting and measurable impact on many lives in restoring health and mental/physical wellness.

She looks at being part of the Nutrishop team as a great privilege to helping her community in a REAL and tangible way. The honor to be able to build rapport, gain trust, ask the right questions, make an educated and thorough health game plan, and give valuable insight is a “win-win”. By providing teaching both one on one and in class settings at local business and organizations, she loves the ability to provide accountability, share resources and to be able to instill lasting positive lifestyle changes and healthy habits to the people of Coeur d’ Alene and the surrounding areas.

Carly uses her knowledge and applies it to her own active lifestyle. Outside of the store, she enjoys all types of recreation and interests. Among the top are snowboarding, drag racing, soccer, kayaking, lifting weights, cooking, shooting, camping, hiking, photography, and more.

With so much to do in the surrounding area, its difficult to say which activity is her favorite in Coeur d’Alene. But, one of her favorite places to be is on the lake in a kayak or boat at sunset.
